What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standard English language test accepted globally. The language test equips an internationally acknowledged benchmark of a candidate's eligibility on a 9-Band scale. The candidates appearing for the IELTS test are scrutinised for their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills.

Over ten thousand organizations in 140 countries accept IELTS scores for admission to various institutions and organizations. Candidates appear in this test to demonstrate their language proficiency in English to secure their place in high schools, universities, various organizations and immigration authorities.

People who aspire to study, stay or work abroad often have to present their IELTS score before the immigration authorities and their respective institutions. A high score on the IELTS test is like a door that leads to your dream career. There is high competition these days as many dreams of moving abroad for a better career and a promising future. Every year, over three million candidates appear for the IELTS exam, but only a few can make it through successfully.

Most countries favor IELTS results over any other English language exam as evidence of your language proficiency as a prerequisite for permanent residency. The IELTS General Training examination is the only non-academic exam offered for immigrants to study in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the USA, in contrast to other test providers.

This test has a fixed format and follows the same criterion of evaluation. The result is given on a band scale of 1-9. The candidates can check their IELTS results online 13 calendar days post-completion of the pen-paper test and four calendar days after completing the computer-based test.

IELTS Eligibility

Age 16 is the minimum requirement for the IELTS exam. Regardless of country or background, anybody over 16 years of age may take the IELTS exam. An exception may be made if the school demands IELTS scores for admission. Although there is no age restriction or qualifying requirements for the IELTS exam imposed by the organisations that administer it, the British Council IELTS, candidates are preferred to be at least 16 years old. Additionally, as the IELTS exam is offered 48 times a year (four times per month), applicants can take it as often as they like and utilize the most recent score to prolong the validity period.

IELTS Preparation Tips

Practice - Guide your study by first identifying your shortcomings by taking a practice exam.

Recognise the test format - It is vitally crucial to know the exam format before preparing. Review the test's subject matter, question, and task formats for each section to familiarise oneself.

Recognise the time restrictions for the exam - Your chances of passing the test successfully within the allotted time increase as you have a more excellent knowledge of the test's structure.

Improve your English language skills and IELTS techniques - Focusing solely on the IELTS is one of the significant errors that students make. They take several IELTS practice exams but neglect to work on their English.

Hone a variety of reading abilities - The reading module's sole function is to evaluate various reading abilities. Reading strategies include getting the gist, skimming, reading for primary concepts, reading for specifics, comprehending a logical argument, and identifying the author's viewpoints, attitudes, and goals.

When writing, use polite and forceful English - Students probably have the most trouble with the writing module. Both academic training assignments must be prepared in a formal tone.
